The province’s police watchdog says it’s investigating after a 19-year-old man was found dead at the University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus.<\/p>\n
The Special Investigations Unit says preliminary information suggests the male died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after Peel Regional Police officers investigating an assault located the man at the UTM student residence.<\/p>\n
News of the person’s death comes after the school issued a shelter-in-place order Monday night for students near McLuhan Court residence, a complex that houses hundreds of first-year students.<\/p>\n
Peel police later said the incident, described as a dangerous weapons call, had been resolved and there was no threat to public safety in an update early Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n
The SIU alleges the man who died had assaulted a woman in Brampton on Monday afternoon and police located him at a student residence near Dundas Street West and Mississauga Road.<\/p>\n
The watchdog says a gunshot was heard and the man was pronounced dead early Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The SIU says it has invoked its mandate because Peel Regional Police officers were in and around the scene at the time of the man’s death.<\/p>\n
The watchdog says no other injuries were reported and there is no threat to public safety.<\/p>\n
