Some said they had stopped reporting certain crimes because they felt their concerns were being overlooked.

The feedback was subsequently brought to Peel Regional Police, with discussions focused on improving communication and ensuring residents receive responses and follow-up when they report incidents.

Against that backdrop, Brampton is marking November as Community Safety Month with a series of opportunities for residents to connect with city staff, learn about crime prevention and find out what resources are available in their communities.

The city is also launching a new initiative called Hello Neighbour: Let’s Talk Safety, which will see trained staff lead neighbourhood safety walks.

Using Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design principles, the walks will help residents identify features of their neighbourhoods that could contribute to safety concerns and explore possible improvements. Residents can request a walk through the city’s website, with a minimum of five participants required.

Last 30 Days: 44,660 Votes

All Time: 1,602,953 Votes

    401 VOTES
What should your newly elected mayor focus on during their first 100 days?

The initiative is part of a broader effort by the city’s Community Safety and Well-Being Office, which is marking its fifth anniversary. Established in 2021, the office leads Brampton’s Community Safety Action Plan, which focuses on prevention, awareness and community empowerment.

The current plan, covering 2022 to 2027, contains 24 tactics and was developed following public engagement that included town halls, resident meetings, advisory sessions and surveys involving more than 1,800 people.

Five free Community Safety pop-up events are also planned throughout November, giving residents an opportunity to speak directly with city staff and learn about local safety initiatives, crime prevention tips and available community resources.

The events are scheduled for:

Tuesday, Nov. 3: Brampton Library’s Claireville Branch, 8750 The Gore Rd., from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 7: Walmart Supercentre, 9455 Mississauga Rd., from noon to 3 p.m.
Thursday, Nov. 19: Brampton Library’s South West Branch, 8405 Financial Dr., from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 22: Gore Meadows Community Centre and Library, 10150 The Gore Rd., from 2 to 5 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 25: Sheridan College’s Davis Campus, 7899 McLaughlin Rd., from noon to 3 p.m.

Brampton is also introducing a new volunteer program for residents aged 18 and older. Two positions are available, including public engagement volunteers who will help share safety information and events and workshop volunteers who will assist with community activities.

Applications will be accepted throughout the year.

The city is also looking for public input as it begins developing the next version of its Community Safety Action Plan, which will take effect in 2028. Residents can complete an online Community Safety and Well-Being Survey to identify concerns in their neighbourhoods and suggest services or resources they would like to see.

The survey is also available in Punjabi.

More information about the Community Safety Month events, volunteer opportunities, neighbourhood safety walks and the survey is available at brampton.ca/communitysafety.

INSAUGA Canada’s Editorial Standards and Policies

Stay in the know.

Subscribe now to receive our daily email of today’s top stories in your city!

Residents in Brampton have been raising concerns about people checking car doors overnight, home break-ins, stolen deliveries and…

[194339
51759,49,48
post-957791","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-brampton","tag-brampton","tag-ca","tag-canada
["GET
