At just 20 years of age, Suhana Gill, a woman of Punjabi origin, has made history by becoming the youngest-ever city councillor of Surrey in British Columbia, Canada. The success of her achievement has highlighted the increasing involvement of young people in politics and public service.

Gill took the oath of office on November 2 and joined the newly elected Surrey City Council, led by Mayor Doug McCallum. Her nomination is a significant step in her political career and she will become among the youngest members of the civic administration of the city.

Suhana Gill was born in Surrey, and has had a lifelong passion for education, politics and community development. She graduated from high school at the age of 15, and attended Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) for political science.

At 19, she earned her Bachelor’s Degree, which ushered in her career path in public service and politics.

Gill also had an interest in public affairs that saw her involved in a number of youth advocacy and community programmes. It was these activities that led to her being involved in conversations about the concerns of Surrey residents.

Suhana Gill’s political and professional journey

Before becoming a city councillor, Gill gained experience in different areas, including public affairs, media and the non-profit sector.

She also appeared before the House of Commons and on CBC News panels.

Her working knowledge about the real estate market provided her with knowledge about housing affordability and the struggles of young families to find homes in the city.

These experiences helped her understand several local issues, particularly those related to housing, infrastructure and opportunities for young residents.

What were Suhana Gill’s election campaign priorities?

Gill contested the October 17 municipal election as a candidate of the Safe Surrey Coalition, led by Doug McCallum.

Affordable housing: Addressing the rising cost of housing and making it easier for young families to find affordable homes.Public safety: Improving safety and creating a secure environment for residents.Transportation: Supporting better public transportation facilities to meet the needs of the growing population.Infrastructure development: Ensuring that public facilities and infrastructure keep pace with the city’s expansion.Youth participation: Giving young people more opportunities to participate in local decision-making and public affairs.

Gill also emphasised the need for a responsive municipal administration that listens to students, young professionals and families.

Why is her election significant?

Suhana Gill has been elected as Surrey’s youngest city councillor, stressing the need for young people to be involved in politics. She has assumed the role of a representative of residents and addressing local concerns at a time in everyone’s life when they’re still studying for higher education or entering their first careers.

She believes young people should be viewed not only as future voters. Rather, they should be involved in the process of developing policy and decision-making which will impact their communities over the next years.

The journey is also an indicator of the increasing presence of people from India and the Punjabi community in the public spectrum in Canada.

As a young resident of Surrey, Gill aims to bring a fresh perspective to local governance and contribute to the city’s development. Her election is a reflection of the young people’s participation in public service and their efforts towards solving the problems of their communities.

[194299
239629,49,48,304264,327628,327633,327630,327274,87674,246295,327629,327632,327631
post-959247","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-surrey","tag-british-columbia-canada","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-cbc-news","tag-gill","tag-indian-origin-councillor-in-canada","tag-punjabi-origin-woman-suhana-gill","tag-suhana-gill","tag-surrey","tag-surrey-city-council","tag-who-is-suhana-gill","tag-yougest-councillor-from-india","tag-youngest-ever-city-councillor-of-surrey
["GET
