What began as a routine medical exam turned tragic when a 22-year-old lawyer went into anaphylactic shock during a CT scan<\/a> and died less than a day later.<\/p>\n

Leticia Paul suffered a severe allergic reaction to a contrast agent used in the scan at Alto Vale Regional Hospital in Rio<\/a> do Sul, Brazil<\/a>, on August 20, according to local outlets G1<\/a>, Ag\u00eancia Globo<\/a> and Oeste SC Not\u00edcias.<\/a><\/p>\n

Paul was intubated and medical staff performed life-saving measures, but the young lawyer, who lived in Lontras, Brazil, died less than 24 hours later.<\/p>\n

Paul\u2019s aunt, Sandra Paul, told G1 that her niece had been undergoing a routine checkup because she has a history of kidney stones when she went into anaphylactic shock.<\/p>\n

Anaphylactic shock is \u201ca sudden, severe and life-threatening allergic reaction\u201d that can trigger symptoms such as \u201cconstriction of the airways, leading to difficulty breathing,\u201d \u201cswelling of the throat,\u201d and \u201cdrop in blood pressure,\u201d among others, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.<\/a><\/p>\n

Paul had recently graduated and was pursuing postgraduate studies in both law and real estate, Oeste SC Not\u00edcias reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe loved law, she was so studious,\u201d her aunt said. \u201cShe dreamed big, and I’m sure she would be a well-known name in the legal world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alto Vale Regional Hospital released a translated statement to news outlets.<\/p>\n
