{"id":96028,"date":"2025-08-25T14:16:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T14:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/96028\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T14:16:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T14:16:09","slug":"trump-says-imports-of-wood-products-may-pose-national-security-threat-raising-fears-in-b-c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/96028\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump says imports of wood products may pose national security threat \u2014 raising fears in B.C."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">B.C.&#8217;s forestry sector is awaiting the results of a U.S. Commerce Department investigation into the imports of wood products, which could impose further tariffs on the beleaguered industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It comes months after U.S. President Donald Trump launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/trump-lumber-imports-1.7472500\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a Section 232 investigation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a Section 232 investigation<\/a>\u00a0into whether\u00a0importing timber, lumber and derivative products could pose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/03\/addressing-the-threat-to-national-security-from-imports-of-timber-lumber\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a national security threat;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a national security threat<\/a>\u00a0to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The prospect of further tariffs on B.C.&#8217;s softwood lumber industry in particular \u2014 which is already dealing with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/canada-softwood-penalties-1.7604876\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:high 35 per cent;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">high 35 per cent<\/a> duty imposed by the U.S. \u2014 could mean even more mill closures and job losses, experts say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">WATCH | Softwood lumber duties increased to 35%:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Lumber is just one of many sectors that could get impacted \u2026 maybe lumber gets a lower tariff, but plywood and OSB\u00a0[engingeered wood]\u00a0and pulp get a higher tariff. We don&#8217;t know,&#8221; said Russ Taylor, a forestry industry consultant and analyst.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;But, very clearly, this is a broad-based approach to how the U.S. can deal with applying tariffs based on whatever their logic is and, you know, [put] the chokehold on Canada,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Under Section 232 of\u00a0the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, top U.S. officials can direct the Secretary of Commerce to\u00a0look into suspected national security threats\u00a0caused by imports. Within 270 days \u2014\u00a0roughly nine months\u00a0\u2014 the secretary must present the president with a report and any recommendations for action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Trump has previously imposed tariffs based on Section 232 investigations for\u00a0steel, aluminum, autos, and copper, which have been particularly damaging to the Canadian economy, leading to job losses and a drop in exports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The United States has long been the single largest market for B.C. lumber exports, representing over two-thirds of the market for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/assets\/gov\/farming-natural-resources-and-industry\/forestry\/forest-industry-economics\/economic-state\/2021_bc_forest_sector_-_statistics_summary.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:approximately $10-billion industry;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">approximately $10-billion industry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, thousands of jobs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/canfor-northern-bc-assets-1.7323159\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:have been lost;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">have been lost<\/a> as mills have been closing around the province in recent years, and major forestry companies are opening up new mills in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">WATCH | Separating fact from fiction in the lumber dispute:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Taylor \u2014 who lists Teal Cedar, West Fraser Timber and Western Forest Products among the nearly 300 forestry companies he&#8217;s worked for \u2014\u00a0says that, while the anticipated Section 232 tariffs could cause further mill curtailments in B.C., the U.S. forestry industry doesn&#8217;t yet have the capacity to fill the void that would be left by a lack of Canadian imports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;We&#8217;re 22 to 24 per cent of U.S. consumption, so that can&#8217;t go away to zero because they&#8217;ll be short,&#8221; he said of the U.S. softwood lumber market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;And believe me, the U.S. mills will be very happy to raise their price \u2026 at a discount to the Canadian price because that&#8217;s just free money in the short term for them,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ultimately, Taylor says that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/california-rebuild-wildfires-tariffs-1.7451715\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the average U.S. homebuilder;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">the average U.S. homebuilder<\/a> is going to be the one that ends up paying more as it becomes more expensive to import Canadian lumber due to tariffs and duties.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A worker inspects lumber on a conveyor belt at West Fraser Pacific Inland Resources sawmill in Smithers, British Columbia, Canada February 4, 2020.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/d82ce0b2abb1a14ccfe315daf88b2d23.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A worker inspects lumber on a conveyor belt at West Fraser Pacific Inland Resources sawmill in Smithers, B.C., in February 2020. Over two-thirds of the B.C. softwood lumber industry exports are destined for the U.S. (Jesse Winter\/Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>Results could arrive in the fall: minister<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Section 232 investigation into imported wood products was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/trump-lumber-imports-1.7472500\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:initiated in March;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">initiated in March<\/a>, the same week Trump ordered a similar investigation into imported copper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That particular probe was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/trump-copper-tariffs-1.7579874\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:finished in July;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">finished in July<\/a>, and the U.S. president ordered a 50 per cent tariff on imported copper as a result.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Ravi Parmar, minister of forests and deputy government house leader delivers a B.C. (Ben Nelms\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Forests Minister Ravi Parmar told CBC News that the province&#8217;s understanding is that Trump has received the Section 232 investigation into wood products, and may be sourcing more data before releasing its results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The investigation will be released this fall at the latest, according to the minister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;But as we know, he has released information that has impacted our pharmaceuticals industry, our copper industry,&#8221; Parmar said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;And so it very well could be just a matter of time that he puts another attack on our forest sector.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Parmar previously said that the investigation could result in quotas, which could limit the amount of forestry products that could be brought into the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But Taylor says he has doubts over whether quotas would be imposed, saying the current state of affairs with high duties was already advantageous for the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not sure what else they would be looking for, except to say we can implement a tariff.
