{"id":96570,"date":"2025-08-25T19:28:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T19:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/96570\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T19:28:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T19:28:09","slug":"what-pete-sampras-said-andre-agassi-did-from-the-first-point-after-becoming-the-youngest-us-open-mens-singles-winner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/96570\/","title":{"rendered":"What Pete Sampras said Andre Agassi did \u2018from the first point\u2019 after becoming the youngest US Open Men\u2019s Singles winner"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Almost 35 years ago, Pete Sampras became the youngest ever winner of the US Open Men\u2019s Singles title.<\/p>\n<p>Sampras, who went on to win 14 Grand Slam titles in total, defeated fellow American <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/andre-agassi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andre Agassi<\/a> in the final, 6-4 6-3 6-2.<\/p>\n<p>The 19-year-old shocked his peers at the tournament, defeating Thomas Muster, Ivan Lendl and <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/john-mcenroe\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John McEnroe<\/a> on his way to the title.<\/p>\n<p>As for Agassi, the rambunctious American would go on to win eight major titles.<\/p>\n<p>After their historic final, Sampras revealed he had pinpointed a weakness in Agassi\u2019s game during the match, before exploiting this weakness to the greatest degree.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"736\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2053151-1024x736.jpg\" alt=\"Pete Sampras serves the ball during the 1990 U.S. Open on September 1, 1990 in Flushing Meadow, New York. Sapras went on to defeat Andre Agassi 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 to become the youngest men's champion in the Open's 110 year history.\" \/>Photo by Rick Stewart\/Getty ImagesPete Sampras said Andre Agassi \u2018was really tentative\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Sampras\u2019 1990 US Open victory marked a significant moment in the 19-year-old\u2019s career: it was the first of his 14 Grand Slam triumphs.<\/p>\n<p>After the match, Sampras described his triumph as \u2018one of those good days.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usopen.org\/en_US\/news\/articles\/2020-06-15\/how_the_us_open_title_was_won_pete_sampras_1990.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported<\/a> by the US Open, Sampras said after his win: \u201cI just go up there and try to hit it as hard as I can and try to aim for the line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I\u2019m having a good day, they\u2019re going to go in, and today was one of those good days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the first point, [Agassi] was really tentative hitting a lot of short balls. I picked that up, and I really had nothing to lose all tournament. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday I was really comfortable. From the first point on, I was hitting the ball really well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The following year, neither Sampras nor Agassi lifted a Grand Slam title. Boris Becker, Jim Courier, Michael Stich and Stefan Edberg won the 1991 Grand Slams.<\/p>\n<p>Agassi went on to win his first Grand Slam title in 1992 at <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/wimbledon\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wimbledon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Agassi said \u2018the better man won\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Agassi managed to circumnavigate the pain caused by losing a Grand Slam final to graciously concede that Sampras had played better than him on the day.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"673\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-57311931-1024x673.jpg\" alt=\"Andre Agassi of the USA is seen during the final match at the US Open in Flushing Meadows on August 27, 1990 in New York, United States.\" class=\"wp-image-319871\" \/>Photo by Bongarts\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Agassi said: \u201cDefinitely the better man won today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you can hit a serve 120 [mph] on the lines, there\u2019s not a lot you can do about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agassi would go on to win the US Open twice, in 1994 and 1999.
