Earlier today, news broke that Tyson Barrie<\/a> has announced his retirement from the NHL. The news first surfaced in a video from DNVR Avalanche on X<\/a> when Barrie himself shared it.<\/p>\n

From there, word spread quickly and it became official. At the age of 34, Barrie is retiring from the NHL. Not long after, the league posted about his retirement.<\/p>\n

Looking Back at Barrie\u2019s Career<\/p>\n

Barrie was once considered one of the league\u2019s best puck-moving defensemen. When he broke into the NHL with the Colorado Avalanche in the 2011-12 season, he showed real potential as a power play specialist. Of course, having players like Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon<\/a> helped, but Barrie had the vision and passing ability to make the most of it. Over eight seasons with the Avalanche, he played 484 games and put up 75 goals and 232 assists for 307 points.<\/p>\n

After his time in Colorado, he was dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the infamous Nazem Kadri trade in 2019<\/a>. He spent just one season in Toronto, appearing in 70 games and posting five goals and 34 assists for 39 points. From there, he signed with the Edmonton Oilers, where he once again thrived as a power play specialist alongside Connor McDavid<\/a> and Leon Draisaitl<\/a>. In 190 games with the Oilers, he scored 25 goals and 107 assists for 132 points.<\/p>\n

Barrie\u2019s run in Edmonton came to an end when he was traded to the Nashville Predators<\/a> during the 2022-23 season. His production dipped, though he still managed four goals and 23 assists for 27 points in 65 games. His final NHL stop came last season with the Calgary Flames, where he appeared in 13 games and recorded one goal and two assists for three points.<\/p>\n

Now that his career is officially over, Barrie leaves the game with 822 NHL games played, 110 goals, 398 assists, and 508 points.<\/p>\n
