{"id":98933,"date":"2025-08-26T18:45:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T18:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/98933\/"},"modified":"2025-08-26T18:45:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T18:45:09","slug":"turner-denies-the-sprint-bigs-after-crazy-late-call-up-to-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/98933\/","title":{"rendered":"Turner Denies the Sprint Bigs after Crazy Late Call-up to Race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gaudu moves into GC lead on countback after finishing far enough ahead of Vingegaard in Voiron bunch sprint.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Turner wins at Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a\" src=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2232197814.jpg\" data-loaded=\"true\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"eager\" width=\"1024\" height=\"621\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent\"  bad-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2232197814.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Updated August 26, 2025 09:49AM<\/p>\n<p>Ben Turner (Ineos Grenadiers) stunned all the sprint bigs with an underdog win Tuesday at the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-primary underline hover:text-primary\/85 underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" data-outbound-instanced=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/category\/events\/vuelta-a-espana\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The young Brit came from several wheels back of an Alpecin-Deceuninck leadout with a meaty sprint that earned him by far the biggest win of his career.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-race favorite <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-primary underline hover:text-primary\/85 underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/jasper-philipsen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jasper Philipsen<\/a> finished second, with his leadout man Edward Planckaert in third.<\/p>\n<p>Alpha speedster <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-primary underline hover:text-primary\/85 underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" data-outbound-instanced=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/mads-pedersen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mads Pedersen<\/a> (Mads Pedersen) was back in sixth.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-primary underline hover:text-primary\/85 underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/david-gaudu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">David Gaudu<\/a> and overnight race-leader <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-primary underline hover:text-primary\/85 underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" data-outbound-instanced=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/jonas-vingegaard\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jonas Vingegaard<\/a> finished on the same time in the group.<\/p>\n<p>However, Gaudu finished sufficiently far ahead of Vingegaard in the bunch to move to the top of the classification on accumulated countback. (Photo: Dario Belingheri\/Getty Images )<\/p>\n<p>Turner\u2019s win is the high point of what\u2019s been a wild few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The 26-year-old won for the first time in two years earlier this month at Tour de Pologne, and wasn\u2019t even scheduled to race La Vuelta.<\/p>\n<p>Turner had to scramble from Belgium after two days of racing last week\u2019s Renewi Tour to replace Lucas Hamilton on Ineos\u2019 Vuelta team.<\/p>\n<p>The Aussie fell sick on the eve of the gran salida and left the squad one man short.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what to say, it\u2019s been a crazy week,\u201d Turner said at the finish, full of tears. \u201cI wanted to come to the Vuelta but I had a lot of issues with my leg since the Giro.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe team really believed in me, and I went to Renewi. Then they said they needed me so of course I said \u2018yes.\u2019 I\u2019d do anything to race these races,\u201d Turner continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was devastated on the first sprint when my chain came off, but I really believed in myself today. (Photo: Tim de Waele\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s long stage out of Italy and into Voiron, France, started in the medium mountains, but was dead-set for the sprinters.<\/p>\n<p>One hundred mostly flat kilometers separated the final descent of the day and the pan-flat finish.<\/p>\n<p>Lidl-Trek, Israel-Premier Tech and Alpecin-Deceuncink fully commited to what was one of the few chances for the sprinters before La Vuelta reaches Madrid in two and a half weeks time.<\/p>\n<p>Turner and an Ineos Grenadiers team centered around Egan Bernal sat back in the bunch and hoped for their chances.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-primary underline hover:text-primary\/85 underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/road\/road-racing\/vuelta-a-espana\/i-never-thought-id-race-again-sean-quinn-bounces-back-with-vuelta-a-espana-raid\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">American comeback king<\/a> Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost) starred in an early break that was reeled in mid-stage, and Bruno Armirail (Decathlon Ag2r-La Mondiale) tried a wildly speculative solo flyer in the final hour.<\/p>\n<p>But the stage was only going one way.<\/p>\n<p>Armirail was caught 16km from the finish before the Vuelta trains assembled for a French showdown between Gaudu and Vingegaard, and Philipsen, Pedersen, and the sprint outsiders \u2013 including Turner.<\/p>\n<p>Up next: Late transfer to Spain for GC shifting team time trial<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-963030\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2232200575.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"\/>Gaudu takes red to Spain.
