{"id":99650,"date":"2025-08-27T01:21:06","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T01:21:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/99650\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T01:21:06","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T01:21:06","slug":"toronto-oktoberfest-2025-cancelled-after-lack-of-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/99650\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto Oktoberfest 2025 cancelled after lack of funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A popular Toronto festival will not be held this year, as organizers say they did not receive their usual funding from the province.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontooktoberfest.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.torontooktoberfest.ca\/\">announcement posted to their website<\/a> earlier this week, Toronto Oktoberfest said the festival will be taking a break this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cDue to current funding restraints, we have made the difficult decision to pause Toronto Oktoberfest for 2025 while we focus on building an even better festival experience for the future,\u201d the message read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The first Bavarian-style Oktoberfest in Toronto launched in 2012, and is a two-day event at the end of September that features food, drink, music, and dance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It\u2019s the first time since its inception that the festival has been cancelled, which organizers said in an emailed statement to CTV News Toronto was due in part to the lack of a provincial grant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cFor the last 10 years or so we have received a provincial grant which supports local festivals and events in Ontario,\u201d organizers said in the statement. \u201cThe amount varies, but it helps sustain the event and offsets potential losses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWithout the grant, the festival runs the risk of losing money. This year we did not receive the grant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The statement also said that supplier costs have tripled since the COVID-19 pandemic and organizers aren\u2019t comfortable passing those costs onto attendees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">They said they plan to reapply for the provincial grant next year in \u201chopes of securing it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cSince 2018, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming has provided nearly $500,000 in support of Toronto\u2019s Oktoberfest through the Experience Ontario Grant Program,\u201d the Ministry said in a statement to CTV News Toronto. \u201cExperience Ontario is a highly competitive, application-based program and we are investing over $27 million dollars in support of over 350 festivals and events across the province.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThis year\u2019s program received over 500 applications, which were measured against established program criteria.
