Johnny Depp is circling another remake of a literary classic. The three-time Oscar nominee is perhaps best known for his role as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Carribean franchise. However, multiple Johnny Depp movies have been versions of previously adapted classics, including 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and 2010’s Alice in Wonderland.
Per Deadline, Paramount is in final negotiations on a new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. The movie, which is titled Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, comes from director Ti West (X, Pearl, MaXXXine), will be a “thrilling ghost story” starring Johnny Depp.
While Depp’s role has not been officially announced, it seems likely that he would play the lead role of miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who is famously visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, learning an important lesson about how to properly treat the people around him.
This is perhaps Depp’s biggest Hollywood project since his defamation lawsuit against his former wife Amber Heard, which he won in 2022. Since then, he has primarily worked on smaller-scale projects, including starring in the French historical drama Jeanne du Barry and directing the World War I movie Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness.
The movie is also set to star Oscar nominee Andrea Riseborough, who is no stranger to literary remakes, having previously appeared in Matilda the Musical. If the deal is closed, Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol will debut on November 13, 2026.
Movies that are currently set to debut in November 2026 include The Cat in the Hat, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, Focker In-Law, and Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.
The project, which boasts a script by Legion’s Nathaniel Halpern, will be produced by Emma Watts and executive produced by Jason Forman and Stephen Deuters. Deuters is the CEO of IN.2 Film, the European production company that Depp founded in 2021.
While there have been many adaptations of A Christmas Carol over the years, the majority of the most notable movies – including The Muppet Christmas Carol, Scrooged, and Spirited – have been comedic retellings of the story.
Considerably fewer notable adaptations have leaned in on the horror aspects inherent in its premise, making the genre one of the most unique elements of Ti West’s project.
Although Ti West’s X trilogy is one of his most well-known works, he is generally known for horror movies. With a filmography that also includes genre titles such as The House of the Devil, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, The Innkeepers, and The Sacrament, he has the background to bring Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol to life.
