Let’s get the presidency stuff out of the way first. Is there one among us who doesn’t wish Miriam (she long ago acceded to one-name status) had gone for it, just as all those rumours, over all those years, had it that she intended to?
As it happens, it seems this was never on the cards. In a chapter (called Park Run) of her new book – Miriam: Life, Work, Everything – she writes that she first heard the rumours in 2010, and had her RTÉ publicists release a statement saying that “she will NOT be standing for the position… in the upcoming election of 2011”. The story flared up again in 2015, when Paddy Power cut her odds from 10/1 to 7/10, and again thereafter.
