Lily Allen has long been the queen of clever lyrics and telling it exactly how it is, so we expected nothing less when her new album dropped on Friday.
The singer’s record West End Girl quickly went viral, with more than a few eyebrows being raised over the lyrics and especially her song Tennis.
In this track, Lily, who split from David Harbour in 2024, sings about a woman called Madeline, whom she finds texts from on her husband’s phone when he returns home after weeks away.

The chorus goes: ‘So I read your text, and now I regret it, I can’t get my head ’round how you’ve been playing tennis, if it was just sex, I wouldn’t be jealous, you won’t play with me, and who’s Madeline?’
Madeline is also the subject of track five on the album, titled Madeline, where Lily sings about reaching out to the other woman and asking ‘how long has it been going on? Is it just sex or is there emotion?’

Madeline’s replies are heard in the interlude with those lyrics saying that her ‘relationship has only ever been about sex’ and that ‘whenever he talks about you [Lily], it’s with the utmost respect.’
Fans quickly started speculating about who this Madeline woman could be, and in an interview with The Times, Lily answered just that question.
When asked who Madeline is, Lily answered that she’s a ‘fictional character’ and when pushed if Madeline is a construct of others, Lily agreed that ‘yes,’ Madeline is.
Several names have been floated online by fans for who could have inspired the character of Madeline, and on Sunday, the Daily Mail claimed to have found the woman who had an alleged affair with David.

The publication claims that Madeline is really costume designer Natalie Tippett, who lives in the US, and met David, who is 16 years her senior, when working on the Netflix movie We Have A Ghost in 2021.
When asked about her messages being used on Lily’s album, Natalie told the Daily Mail: ‘Yeah. I just don’t feel comfortable talking about it at the moment.’
She added: ‘Of course I’ve heard the song. But I have a family and things to protect.’
