Club finals are often family affairs, siblings sharing dressing rooms, medals, and memories. But in a surreal twist on Sunday, the Grimley brothers of Armagh found themselves split between counties and colours but managed to all end the day as champions.

As the final whistles blew in Armagh and Tyrone, the Grimley name was etched into the history books on two fronts.

Niall and Liam Grimley played their part in an unforgettable win for Madden Raparees, as they captured a first-ever Armagh Senior Football Championship title. In front of a huge crowd at the Athletic Grounds, Madden powered past Cullyhanna on a scoreline of 0-20 to 0-9, with Armagh starlet Darragh McMullen scooping the man of the match award for a composed and classy display.

As journalist Niall McCoy astutely pointed out, the story didn’t end there for the Grimley family, while Niall and Liam were making history with Madden, their brother Ryan was simultaneously winning a first-ever Tyrone SFC title with Loughmacrory, completing a remarkable double for the trio across two counties on the same day.

While all that was unfolding in Armagh, their brother Ryan Grimley was lining out in the Tyrone Senior Football Championship final, and also making club history.

Loughmacrory edged a pulsating battle with Trillick, winning 0-18 to 2-11 to seal their first-ever Tyrone SFC crown. The celebrations at both grounds will live long in the memory, not least in the Grimley household.

For one family to feature in not one, but two historic county final breakthroughs on the same afternoon, in two different counties, is the kind of script that even the most seasoned GAA fan wouldn’t dream of writing.

It’s the perfect example of how club football can still produce the kind of magic moments that define careers, bind communities, and leave families with memories to last a lifetime. The Grimleys have etched their names into folklore across two proud parishes, and days like this are what the GAA is all about.
