FROM THE LEXINGTON ELECTRIC SYSTEM ON 9/9/25:

In the past week we’ve had several different broadband related outages due to shotgun pellet damage to our fiber infrastructure. The photos below show some of the damaged fiber.

When someone shoots at doves on the fiber cable, the pellets go through the cable and damage the individual fiber strands. When this happens, the light signal is not able to pass through the fiber strands therefore causing network outages to some of our LexNet customers.

Making repairs to this type of damage typically requires significant splicing, which is very costly and time consuming. The customers affected by this damage typically see a network outage for several hours before the repairs can be completed. It simply takes time to respond to the outage, locate the damage on the cable, and then make the necessary repairs.

With dove season in full swing, we ask all our customers to please be mindful of their surroundings and avoid shooting doves on or near fiber/electric lines.
