Residents of a Tralee nursing home have given glowing reviews during a recent HIQA inspection.

The health watchdog carried out an unannounced inspection of Saint Louis Nursing Home in Ballymullen in August.

Clients praised the food, staff, and overall care, with inspectors noting a strong commitment to residents’ well-being, despite some areas for improvement

HIQA found the centre compliant with seven Health Act regulations, substantially compliant with four, and not compliant with one.

While the building met residents’ needs, the inspector highlighted maintenance issues including damp storage areas for wheelchairs.

The premises was deemed not compliant, but management said major improvement works are under way, including a revamp of the kitchen and dining room.

HIQA also called for stronger infection control procedures.

In response, management says the home has begun an antimicrobial surveillance system to track drug use and effectiveness, along with a new Legionella monitoring programme.

The report also raised issues with the centre’s transfer forms, pre-admission assessments, and care plans.

Overall, Saint Louis Nursing Home was recognised for providing high-quality care.
