Residents of a south-east Clare nursing home have told inspectors they don’t always feel safe at the facility while others have claimed staff sometimes pretend like they don’t exist.
The Health Information and Quality Authority has instructed the designated centre for older people to rectify issues in four five different areas after their inspection found that “residents’ rights were not fully upheld”.
HIQA visited the Ennis Road Care Facility on the Ennis Road in Meelick for an unannounced inspection on the 23rd of July.
While a number of the 79 residents present described the care provided to them as “smashing” or “ten out of ten”, the vast majority were dissatisfied with the service.
Some residents told inspectors that they didn’t always feel safe in the centre because staff didn’t always engage with them or explain what they were doing, and that they had observed their peers waiting extended periods of time for assistance.
Two residents said when they ask for assistance, staff sometimes “ignore” them” or “pretend like I don’t exist”.
Concerns were also raised in relation to the level of training staff had received, the channel through which residents could make complaints and the overall quality of the care.
HIQA found that the provider wasn’t compliant in the areas of staffing, training and staff development, governance and management, complaints’ procedure and residents’ rights.
The provider has submitted a compliance plan to HIQA explaining the actions it will take to improve in these areas.
