Tony Christie, born in south Yorkshire to an Irish family, found fame in 1971 with hits such as (Is This The Way To) Amarillo and I Did What I Did for Maria.
He enjoyed a resurgence in popularity after Amarillo was used in the Peter Kay series Phoenix Nights. When the song was re-released in 2005, with a video in aid of Comic Relief that featured celebrities including Kay, it hit No 1 in the UK.
