The portrait of President Michael D Higgins has already been taken down from its central position just inside the main entrance door to Leinster House.

It is expected to be moved to Áras an Uachtaráin and it is likely that a portrait of the incoming president Catherine Connolly will be put on display in Leinster House at some point in the future.

President Higgins, who will depart the Áras later this evening, remains in office until midnight.

The Sanctuary Runners group, which brings locals and migrants together through jogging in communities around the country, will line the avenue near the residence as he departs.
