Hamish Duncan presented a cheque for Counselling & Family Mediation Western Isles after raising £4,620 for the service in a Butt to Barra challenge.
Hamish completed the challenge in September to raise money and awareness for the company after receiving help and support in coming to terms with the sexual abuse he faced as a child.
It was through counselling where Hamish looked back on the painful memories from his childhood, having been sexually abused when he was between 6-11 years old. He kept this secret from everyone except Morag, his wife of almost 32 years.
Hamish walked for 12 days straight with his 11-year-old Collie, Brèagha. He persevered through an ankle injury to complete the challenge and bring more awareness to child sexual abuse, while also raising funds for the service that helped him to finally open up and tell people what he had been through.
Opening up at church and to his family and friends, Hamish always hoped that others who may have also gone through the same situation would feel less alone and encouraged to speak out and find support.
Hamish said he greatly appreciates everyone’s support in his efforts in the challenge, but also the support they’ve shown him in his bravery in speaking out.
He thanks everyone for the donations made, saying he feels “humbled” to see so many people add to the fundraiser.
A cheque of £4,620 was handed to Counselling & Family Mediation Western Isles by Hamish today (Friday 7 November) at the companies premises on Bank Street.
Hamish was joined by Brèagha in handing over the total amount, completing the challenge as they started.
