There will be one less Irish manager in the EFL moving forward, with it being announced this afternoon that Athlone native Alan Sheehan had been sacked as Swansea City boss.
The 39-year old was appointed as the club’s full-time manager back in April, having taken over as interim boss in February. With Swansea being in relegation trouble when he first came into the role, Sheehan would eventually lead them an 11th placed finish in the Championship.
The club would experience a promising start to the 2025/26, although results had deteriorated in recent weeks. Saturday’s 4-1 loss at home to Ipswich Town meant they had won just one of their last eight games in all competitions.
Reports of Sheehan’s exit would emerge earlier this morning, with Swansea City confirming the news a few hours later.

Swansea City Fans Shared Same Sentiment Over Club’s Sacking Of Irish Manager
Alan Sheehan first became associated with Swansea City in June of 2023, joining as an assistant coach under Michael Duff. He would go on to have an interim spell in charge of the club when Duff was sacked in December of that year.

He continued as an assistant under Luke Williams, who he would go on to replace earlier this year.
Considering that Sheehan had been an excellent servant to the club, it seems as though his sacking has brought mixed emotions among Swansea City supporters. The consensus seems to be that while they appreciated the effort put forward by the Irishman, now seemed like the right time to move on for all involved.
The correct decision in sacking Alan Sheehan.
Thank you for steering us away from relegation last season, but this was the correct move going forward for our football club before it was too late in the season.
The next appointment needs to be more aligned with our identity. 🦢 pic.twitter.com/BA9gnPR86c

I have a feeling about the next Swans appointment. I think we’ll go BIG! 🙏
Thank you Alan Sheehan. Worked miracles last season, not quite worked this season, but as a bloke I liked him, and wish him nothing but the best for the future.

I’m wholeheartedly thankful to Alan Sheehan for his two interim spells – he came into two extremely difficult situations and steered us to safety.
That being said, I’m delighted that the club has made the right decision. His philosophy wasn’t an ideological fit for Swansea City. pic.twitter.com/8r0wTkzrrZ

Ultimately the correct decision as the results and football simply weren’t good enough, but Sheehan is a truly nice guy who I wish all the best in the future. 🦢 pic.twitter.com/iwrSOYyhDZ

Genuinely sad to see him go, although it is the correct decision.
One of the best football people we’ve had at the club in a long time. No ego, no bullshit ‘philosophy’ to blindly follow, no sense of being bigger than the club, no twerking for bigger jobs. Best of luck to him.

Alan Sheehan will no doubt be hoping for another managerial opportunity in the near future, with his growing CV sure to appeal to another EFL club at some point.
Unfortunately, his time at Swansea City did not quite work out on this occasion.
