A man in his 30s has been arrested by Gardaí on Wednesday as part of an investigation into cross-border terrorism.

He is the third person to be arrested in relation to the case, and was arrested this afternoon in Co Laois and is currently detained at a garda station in the Midlands under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Two other men were arrested by gardaí in Laois last week in connection with the investigation and have appeared before the courts. One man was charged with possessing an explosive substance – namely components for three pipe bomb-type improvised explosive devices (IED) and four incendiary type IEDs with white dish cloth wicks at his home in Northern Ireland.

The second man was charged with possessing an explosive substance – four threaded pipe end caps and six litres of hydrogen peroxide – at O’Moore Place in Portlaoise.

The investigation continues to be led by An Garda Síochána Special Detective Unit, a garda spokesperson said.
