AN AFGHAN businessman has opened a new shop in a former landmark pub in the city centre.

Zubir Koohestani has opened the outlet, named Ariana, after the ancient name for the Afghan region, at the old Windmill Pub in Henry Street.

In doing so, he has created six new jobs.

“It is giving a new lease of life to the street. We have a range of new items, a little snack bar. We specialise in fresh meat, we have a deli where we bake bread. We sell a range of rices, spices and plain things,” he said.

He added there has been good feedback from the community.

In a nod to the past use of the building, an image of a Windmill has been placed on the signage, which depicts the propellers in action.

The Windmill Pub has been open on-and-off in the last few years.

After closing in 2019, it re-opened for time in 2021 and 2022.

It then closed again, before re-opening as a shisha bar, before the shutters fell on that enterprise.

The Windmill had been a fixture in Henry Street for decades.
