Piers Morgan is having what can only be described as a full internet meltdown after Cristiano Ronaldo’s red card against Ireland last night, and in classic Piers fashion he has taken the whole thing very personally.

Portugal were already 2–0 down thanks to Troy Parrott’s first-half double when Ronaldo became tangled up with Dara O’Shea just after the hour mark. The two were battling for space in the Irish box when the 40-year-old appeared to drive an elbow into O’Shea’s back. The Ipswich defender dropped to the turf and the Aviva crowd absolutely erupted as Irish players rushed in to confront Ronaldo.

Referee Glenn Nyberg initially reached for a yellow card. VAR then advised him to check the incident on the pitchside monitor and after a short review he returned to upgrade it to a straight red. Ronaldo had been visibly frustrated long before this moment and he did not accept the decision quietly. He sarcastically applauded the Irish fans, exchanged a few heated words with Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson and eventually made his way down the tunnel.

One man who felt the injustice more than anyone was Piers Morgan. Morgan considers himself a close confidant of Ronaldo and has interviewed him twice in recent years, the latest conversation coming only last week. So when Ronaldo was sent off, Morgan took it as a personal insult.

He rushed to X and unloaded a string of furious posts.

Morgan claimed that Dara O’Shea had “previous” for deliberately provoking Ronaldo, a reference to the 2022 World Cup qualifier incident where O’Shea gently rolled the ball away as Ronaldo was about to take a penalty.

Well well well.. it seems Dara O’Shea has form for deliberately provoking Ronaldo in World Cup
Qualifiers, then diving like an Olympic swimmer to try to get him sent off. Here’s what he did to @cristiano when Ireland played Portugal in 2021.. https://t.co/sEYqLUCRcg

Morgan then declared that the red card was “ridiculous” and insisted Ronaldo was only trying to stop someone from pulling his shirt back.

Then came the moment everyone knew was coming.

The Messi comparison.

According to Morgan, Messi committed “exactly the same” act recently and somehow escaped punishment. His tone suggested he believed this was part of a grand conspiracy rather than a man elbowing an opponent in front of 50,000 people and a dozen cameras.

What makes all of this even more entertaining is that Morgan is currently in the process of applying for Irish citizenship through his father’s heritage. Judging by his reaction last night he is not exactly winning over his soon-to-be compatriots.
