Ireland face Hungary in one of their most important games in recent history this afternoon. The Boys in Green know that a win will at the very least secure them a World Cup play-off place.

Cristiano Ronaldo saw red on an incredible night at the Aviva Stadium, with the result leaving Ireland just one point behind Hungary in Group F. Portugal are two points further ahead at the top.

The Hungarians recorded a 1-0 victory over Armenia on the same night, meaning it is all to play for this afternoon. Here is what you need to know about the match:

Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson: “I’m tempted to play the same team. Will I do it? I don’t know.

“The confidence is there and the belief is there. We will see how they are in training and take it from there.

“We said we would always take it if we go to the final match and we still have a chance. We love the fact that it’s in our hands now. Everything is in our hands and we’ll grab it.”

Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher: “We enjoyed that victory obviously, but I think pretty soon after the game attention turned towards this match and how important this is.

“All that matters now is Sunday. We’re going to go into Sunday now ready and prepared.”
