The victim of an alleged stabbing assault at a home on the northside overnight has been named locally as Mark O’Connell. The 38-year-old died at Cork University Hospital after sustaining serious injuries during an altercation at a home in the Hollyhill area of Cork city in the early hours this morning.

Gardaí and the National Ambulance Service responded to the scene at the Hollyville residential estate at around 4.30 am this morning, and Mr O’Connell was rushed to hospital where he passed away. He is understood to have suffered stab injuries during an incident at a house in the early hours of the morning. It’s understood that Mr O’Connell was injured during a serious disturbance at the home, which is in a mature, residential housing estate off Harbour View Road. Neighbours and local residents have been deeply upset by the incident.

A man in his 50s was arrested shortly after the incident, in connection with the investigation. He is detained at a Garda station in the Cork division, where he is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. He may be held for up to 24 hours without charge. A senior investigating officer has been assigned to lead the investigation, and a liaison officer has been appointed to support Mark O’Connell’s family. The results of a post-mortem examination will assist Gardaí in their investigation.

Mr O’Connell’s death has sent shockwaves through the community. Cork North Central TD Thomas Gould earlier spoke of a sense of sadness following such a shocking incident. He told Cork Beo: “My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased and everyone affected by this incident. This was a tragedy, and the neighbours and nearby residents are shocked. This is a quiet community, and people are very upset this morning.”

May he RIP.
