Saturday’s torrential downpour didn’t dampen spirits as the longest pump track in Ireland was officially launched in Wicklow town.
Located along the Murrough, beside the already established playpark and skatepark, the Velosolutions pump track was designed and built by Trailbreaker. It’s also the first track in the country with a separate line for advanced bike riders, providing 230 metres of main track. The beginner’s track is 50 metres, which forms 280 linear metres of track.
The new facility is free to use and welcomes riders of all ages and skill levels.
Speaking at the launch, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow Municipal District, Cllr Graham Richmond said: “This pump track represents forward-thinking recreational planning. It provides a vibrant and dynamic space where children, adults and athletes can all come together. Whether on a bike, scooter or skateboard this facility invites movement, connection and outdoor movement.
“I want to commend the Wicklow Town Team for their energy and continued commitment. This commitment to improve our town is clear in every initiative they become involved in and the pump track is a perfect example of what community – driven collaboration can accomplish.
“This pump track is about more than sport. It is about community, about giving people a place to belong, participate and be active.”
Members of FYI Dance Club put on a well-received display as part of the launch.
Speaking on Tuesday, Cllr Richmond was greatly encouraged by the large numbers already visiting and using the facilities.
“There was a huge number of riders present for the launch, and the pump track has been packed ever since, even with the recent bad weather.”
