UNITED STRIDERS AC athlete Pat Culleton produced an outstanding performance for Ireland at the British and Irish Masters cross-country championships, held last weekend in the demanding surroundings of Roundhay Park, Leeds.
The 8km course was made particularly testing after heavy rain the previous day, leaving athletes to contend with deep mud and challenging, rolling terrain throughout.
Culleton, competing in the M55 category, finished 12th out of 28 and was the third scorer for the Irish team.
With three to score, Ireland secured the team bronze medal through the combined efforts of Culleton, Ronan O’Reilly of Ballyroan Abbeyleix AC – who placed seventh – Anthony Doherty of Millford AC (ninth), and Gerry Carty of Galway City Harriers (14th).
Selection for the championships comes via the Masters Autumn Open cross-country, one of the most competitive fixtures on the masters calendar, making Culleton’s achievement particularly noteworthy.
His appearance also marks a milestone for United Striders AC, as Culleton is only the second Strider ever to compete at the British and Irish Masters.
He is part of a strong group of masters athletes within the club who continue to show their quality at national and international level.
