A 25-year-old man has appeared before the district court in Cork charged with murdering his mother and with assault causing harm to his father.
David Gallagher, of Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, County Cork, was remanded in custody.
Stella Gallagher, who was 59, suffered fatal injuries when she was stabbed as she attempted to escape from her home at Shrewsbury Downs in Ballinlough on Monday night.
Her 62-year old husband, Brian, was seriously injured.
Ms Gallagher was brought to Cork University Hospital, but was pronounced dead before midnight on Monday.
Gardaà (Irish police) began an investigation.
On Tuesday, a technical and forensic examination was conducted at the Gallaghers’ home, door-to-door enquiries were carried out, and a local green area was searched.
On Wednesday, David Gallagher was brought before the district court in Cork.
Det Sgt Niall Hayes said Mr Gallagher made no reply when the charges were put to him.
Solicitor Shane Collins-Daly said there was consent to a remand in custody.
Judge John King remanded Mr Gallagher in custody, and recommended that he receive urgent psychiatric evaluation in prison.
He will be back before the court on 27 November.
