While Ireland’s dramatic comeback victory against Hungary has clearly been the main topic of discussion in this country in recent days, it has also caught the attentions of football fans further afield.

Ireland have received a huge amount of acclaim for their big win in Budapest, with the celebrations following Troy Parrott’s late winner going viral around the globe.

There is still plenty of work to be done in order for Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side to reach the World Cup, but that moment is sure to live long in the memory. Despite this, some feel that the Irish players went too far with the scenes at the end of that game.

Roy Keane Rubbishes Wayne Rooney’s Ireland Celebration Accusation

On the latest episode of Stick To Football, Ireland’s game against Hungary was one of the main talking points.

While the majority of the panelists loved seeing the Irish team celebrate the occasion in the way they did, Wayne Rooney felt that they went a bit ‘over the top’ considering that they hadn’t actually qualified for the World Cup. It was a claim that Cork man Roy Keane was quick to shoot down:

Rooney: I think it was a little bit over the top. I get it, but the celebrations, I thought they had actually qualified.

Keane: What I would say about that Wayne, is that Ireland have been so bad the last few years. For them to get the win in Hungary with the last kick of the game, there’s a lot of work still to be done to qualify obviously, but I wouldn’t begrudge them that moment.

For that team that has been struggling for so many years, to give a bit of a lift to the country. To get back to back wins, beating Portugal was huge, then you go and beat Hungary with the last kick of the game. If you can’t enjoy them moments.

I wouldn’t begrudge them it, enjoy that moment…

Rooney: I get what Roy said, I understand that. I just think it was a little bit too much…

Keane: Ireland have struggled over the years, particularly away from home, you always think there’s a result in them at home. To go and get back to back wins, obviously they will need another one because the draw will be away from home. That will be the challenge for them.

Rooney is clearly looking at this game through an English lens, a country that take qualifying for major tournaments for granted. His claims about Ireland were a bit close-minded.

In saying that, it was good to see Roy Keane quickly put him back in his place. The former Manchester United captain has very high standards for his country, but even he was in a joyous mood on the back of this result.

It is something we will hope to see continue once the play-offs get underway in March.
