Elected representatives disappointed and frustrated by the decision

The Avon resort in Blessington.
A decision by the Department of Justice to keep the Avon resort in Blessington, Co Wicklow, in use as accommodation for international protection applicants for another year has sparked sharp criticism from local representatives, who say the move deals a major blow to west Wicklow’s already-strained tourism sector.
The popular lakeside complex, once positioned as a flagship tourism hub for the region, has been housing Ukrainians and international protection applicants in recent years. The department has now agreed a 12-month contract with Arturo Ventures ULC to continue providing space for up to 130 people, with staffing and services remaining unchanged.
