When the original version of The Beatles Anthology was shown on ITV between November 26 and December 31, 1995, it had been 30 years since the release of Rubber Soul, the Beatles album that marked a huge creative leap in the complexity and maturity of their music, and 15 years since the murder of John Lennon.
Watching Anthology back then and seeing the three surviving Beatles together was a thrilling, deeply emotional experience, tinged with sadness because of the absence of John, who tells his side of the story in copious archive footage.
