A pensioner has died following a house fire in Cork.
The blaze broke out at a property on Noonan’s Road on Cork’s southside around 3am on Sunday.
Cork Fire Brigade units and gardaà were at the scene within minutes.
Smoke was billowing from the property and firefighters had to use breathing apparatus to gain entry to the home.
Neighbours had indicated that at least one person was believed to be inside.
A man in his 60s was found unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom at the house.
He was removed from the property and given emergency medical treatment at the scene before being rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH).
Despite efforts by doctors to stabilise his condition, he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a full post mortem examination is scheduled to take place.
A file will be prepared for the Cork Coroner.
A full technical and forensic examination of the property will be conducted to determine the cause of the blaze.
However, the initial indications are that the fire was accidental.
The pensioner is understood to have lived at the property for some time.
