A mum has paid an emotional tribute after the death of her teenage son, who died in hospital days after being involved in a collision involving a car and an e-bike in Co Waterford. Sammy Hanrahan, from Ballybeg in Waterford city, was rushed to University Hospital Waterford after the crash, which occurred on Cork Road shortly before 8 pm on Sunday, November 16. Gardaà confirmed on Friday evening that the 18-year-old had sadly passed away.
Sammy’s mum, Jane, has paid an emotional tribute to her son. On his death notice shared on RIP.ie, she said: “Forever my baby boy, Love you always, Mammy.” Sammy’s aunt Shannen also paid a heartbreaking tribute to the youngster saying: “Today we lost my nephew Sammy after the most horrific week any family would ever have to go through. We are broken. Fly high chicken, you will always be loved.”

Sammy was a gifted athlete who played Gaelic football for his local side, St Saviours GAA, with the club paying tribute to the tragic teen in a message shared on social media. The club said: “It is with great sadness that our club learned of the passing of young Sammy Hanrahan, who tragically passed away on Friday. Sammy was part of our U13 Eastern and County Football Championship–winning team in 2019 under manager Anthony Jacob. He also went on to win the U13 Hurling Championship in 2020 under managers Deaker Wyse and Dayne Flynn.
“Many of Sammy’s teammates and close friends, seen in the photos, continue to play with our club today at minor and U20 level. His presence and the friendships formed during those years will be fondly remembered by all who shared the pitch with him. Our sincere condolences to all of Sammy’s family, friends, and everyone in our club community who feels his loss. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
Sammy attended the Waterford Youth Training and Education Centre, which provides training for early school leavers and young unemployed people, with staff at the centre paying tribute to the teenager. They paid tribute to him, releasing a statement saying: “It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of one of our learners, Sammy Hanrahan,
“On behalf of all the staff and learners at WYTEC, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Sammy’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. We remember him with great fondness and his friendliness he brought to our community. His loss is felt deeply by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. May you find comfort and strength in the memories you shared, and may his gentle soul rest in peace.”
Gardaà are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the fatal collision to come forward. Any road users with camera footage, including motorists with dash-cam footage from the area at the time, are asked to provide it to investigating GardaÃ.
