While the phrase “unique opportunity” is ubiquitous enough in property listings to have lost all impact, it’s certainly apt in auctioneer John Radford’s latest listing. After all, it’s not every day the opportunity arises to purchase your very own airfield.

That’s what’s on offer just outside the rural village of Taghmon, Co Wexford, as 13.25 acres better known as Lakeview Airfield at Cloonerane goes under the hammer at public auction on Thursday, October 9.

When it officially opened in 2018, Lakeview Airfield was the second air strip operating in the area, founder Anne Butler having gone through a drawn-out two year planning process involving An Bord Pleanála to get it over the line.

Since then, it’s welcomed pilots from all over Ireland and the UK and hosted paramotoring events and various other meet ups.

The listing is one of the more unusual ones to have come across the books at Sherry Fitzgerald Radford and they are looking to start the bidding at around €250,000.

“I’ll hold my hands up and say that it wouldn’t necessarily be my area of expertise,” John Radford smiles. “From what I’m told though, this is a really good setup for flying. It’s fully levelled and drained and comes with a hangar and everything. Importantly, it’s also ideally located away from power lines etc and is the last stop before the UK.”

When the hammer falls on October 9, Mr Radford is unsure whether the airfield will be retained for flying enthusiasts or if the land will be put to a different use.

“The significance of having the airfield there is huge for this sector, I’m told,” he says. “If it’s not purchased for private use, then it could easily be utilised as some kind of training facility for pilots. Planning permission for a venture like this can be extremely difficult to obtain, along with the suitable terrain. It could also be a great opportunity for a forward-thinking flying club or investor. The airfield has no air-flying restrictions as it’s in a completely free-flying zone and offers superb accessibility.

“Having said that, it’s possible that someone could be looking at it with the goal of returning the land to agricultural use. That’s why we’ve decided to go with a public auction, to see what interest is out there. We’ll find out on the day.”

Lakeview Airfield will be auctioned off at 12 noon on October 9, both online and in person at Sherry Fitzgerald Radford’s offices in Wexford town. For more details or to arrange a viewing, contact the auctioneer.
