Met Éireann has forecast a cold and wet weekend, with temperatures set to dip to a chilly -2C on Saturday night.

Overall, Met Éireann said there would be changeable conditions over the coming days. The national forecaster predicted rain at first before turning largely dry away from Atlantic coastal counties for a time with further rain and showers to follow later in the week.

The weekend will start off with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle but this will clear in the early afternoon with sunshine and the odd shower following. It will be a cold and mostly clear night with some showers, with temperatures hitting a potential -2C.

Sunday morning will be predominantly dry and bright with just isolated showers, however, rain will hit in the early afternoon, extending eastwards to all areas by early evening.

While Saturday has gotten off to a grey and wet start, Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather said that after some wintry falls on mountains in the Southeast, some sunny spells would appear in the afternoon.

He wrote: “A cool morning in Southeast, rain is moving Southeast with some wintry falls on mountains. Sunny spells following this afternoon.”

Here is Met Éireann’s Irish weather forecast for the weekend and the week ahead:

Saturday

A mix of cloud and sunny spells this morning with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle sinking southeastwards, clearing by early afternoon with sunshine and the odd shower following from the northwest. Scattered showers will develop in the west and northwest after dark. Highest temperatures of 6C to 9C in moderate north to northwest winds, fresher at times near eastern coasts.

A cold and mostly clear night with some showers, mainly in the north and west early in the night. Frost and possibly some ice will form in places with lowest temperatures of -2C to 2C. Light westerly or variable breezes with allow mist and fog patches to develop.

Sunday

Predominately dry and bright tomorrow morning with just isolated showers. However, cloud will build from the west with rain following into the west and southwest in the early afternoon, extending eastwards to all areas by early evening as southerly winds increase fresh to strong. Highest afternoon temperatures of 4C to 8C.

On Sunday night widespread rain at first will clear eastwards as fresh to strong southerly winds ease. Some clear spells and showers will follow into the north and west. After a brief reprieve in Munster and south Leinster, another spell of rain will push up from the south. Lowest temperatures of 5C to 9C generally, a little cooler for Ulster early in the night.

Monday

Some uncertainty in the details but indications are that the rain will extend northwards through the morning, turning heavy at times and with strengthening southwesterly winds, possibly turning windy in parts. Sunshine will extend from the southwest through the afternoon as winds gradually moderate and showers follow, mainly affecting the western half of the country. Temperatures in the early afternoon of 7C to 11C.

Dry and clear for most of Monday night though scattered showers will continue for Atlantic coastal counties. Lowest temperatures of 1C to 5C in mostly moderate southwest winds.

Tuesday

Scattered showers will continue for Atlantic coastal counties. Largely dry with good spells of sunshine elsewhere. Highest temperatures of 7C to 10C or 11C in light to moderate south or southwest winds.
