Ireland hero Troy Parrott accepted full responsibility for his failed attempt at a ‘Panenka’ from the penalty spot, which cost his AZ Alkmaar side a valuable point in the top flight in the Netherlands.
Already on the back of a two-game losing streak in the domestic league, AZ were 1-0 down away to FC Twente when they were awarded a penalty deep into injury time. The club’s top scorer Parrott stepped up but he tried to chip the goalkeeper, Panenka-style, instead of going for power and blazed the kick over the bar.
It was the Dubliner’s third consecutive penalty miss in the Eredivisie this season.

“It was poor finishing,” AZ coach Maarten Martens said of Parrott after the game.
“If he chipped it there and scored, he’d be doing well. Troy took responsibility; he gave it his all today, but didn’t finish well. He’s already taken responsibility for that with the rest of the team.
“He took responsibility for the loss of points, and rightly so. He can do much better than this, he realises that himself. It wasn’t good enough today. He’s still a striker, and he is creative. We’ll definitely talk about it.”
Teammate Peer Koopmeiners, who starred for AZ alongside Parrott in their midweek Conference League win at home to Shelbourne, added that Parrott admitted his error in front of the group.
Koopmeiners said: ” Ultimately, he apologised, and now it’s up to us to take some responsibility for it.”
A third straight league defeat sees AZ drop to fourth in the table.
