Uisce Éireann have confirmed that a man died after being fatally injured in a workplace accident at a water treatment plant in County Mayo.

The utility company said that a man was working “on behalf of our contractor, at a water infrastructure construction site” when he died on Saturday, November 29.

The Irish Independent understands the deceased was living in County Galway and died in what one local described as a “freak accident” at the Lough Mask Water Treatment Plant in Tourmakeady.

Uisce Éireann is liaising with the relevant authorities and the Health and Safety Authority has launched an investigation into the incident. Uisce Éireann will not be making any further comment.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, work colleagues, and friends of the deceased at this very difficult time,” they said in a statement.

In late September, the sod was turned on a €29 million upgrade of the Lough Mask (Tourmakeady) Water Treatment Plant – which currently services 42,000 households with approximately around 40 million litres of clean drinking per day – and work had been ongoing for a number of weeks.

The project, which is being undertaken by Veolia Water on behalf of Uisce Éireann, is due for completion in 2028.
