Mark Hamill is known to generations of fans as the iconic Jedi, Luke Skywalker, in the Star Wars franchise and as the voice of the villainous Joker from the Batman franchise. The 73-year-old star, after more than five decades of acting, is seemingly stepping back from major roles unless they are something incredibly out-of-the-box.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Hamill also took a shot at Marvel when talking about his semi-retirement. Back in 2019, at a San Diego Comic-Con appearance, Hamill said he was planning on retiring from live-action roles and would mainly focus on voiceover work. But offers for projects like Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher and The Life of Chuck motivated his return to the screen.
Hamill, who is now starring in Francis Lawrence’s The Long Walk, which, like The Life of Chuck, is based on a Stephen King story, said, “The older you get, the less you care.”
“I said to my agent, ‘I’ll keep doing voiceover, but I just don’t relish the idea of going off on location and leaving my family,’” Hamill stated. “Because (with) voiceover, they’re four-hour sessions. You might have two in one day, but then you go home to your wife and your dogs, and you sleep in your own bed,” he continued.
“All I was saying is I’m at a point where I don’t have the fire in my belly anymore. I’m not on the phone to my agent saying, ‘I gotta be in a Marvel movie.’ I don’t care,” Hamill added. With those comments, it seems as though MCU fans won’t be seeing Hamill in an Avengers movie anytime soon.
Hamill’s most recent voice work has included projects like The Wild Robot, The Sandman, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, Digiman, and Big City Greens.
That “I don’t care” mindset is what Hamill said led to his role in 2024’s The Wild Robot. “I love animation. That’s my wheelhouse,” he said. The Wild Robot, from director Chris Sanders, was nominated for three Academy Awards.

In 2023, Hamill said he would never again voice the role of The Joker in the animated Batman franchise, following the death of Kevin Conroy, who voiced Batman. “We were like partners. We were like Laurel and Hardy. Without Kevin there, there doesn’t seem to be a Batman for me,” Hamill said at that time.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hamill once again talked about the possibility of returning to Gotham to voice the Joker in any future DC projects. But, he maintains that it wouldn’t make sense without Conroy playing the part of the Caped Crusader. “When they’d (Warner Bros.) asked (about a new project), ‘Do you want to do the Joker?’ My only question was, ‘Is Kevin doing Batman?’ If he’s in, I don’t even have to read it,” Hamill said. He added, “I don’t know whether they’ve (Warner Bros.) tried to get me back, but my agent would know. But not to my knowledge. It’s like with Star Wars. You complete a role, you do your best, and when it’s over, you let it go.
Fans of Hamill can see him starring in the new horror film, The Long Walk, which is currently playing in movie theaters.
