As we approach the end of the year, Google’s Year in Search is revealing Ireland’s collective curiosity.

Given our national preoccupation with the weather, it’s hardly surprising that the record-breaking Storm Eowyn was the most searched term of the year. This storm, which battered Ireland in January, was one of the most potent and widespread wind events to hit Ireland since the 1800s.

The public also turned to Google to decipher how to pronounce the storm’s name, with ‘How to pronounce Eowyn’ ranking as the third most popular ‘How to’ search term.

Turning to Google for answers has become a daily habit for many of us. In a year when Ireland welcomed a new President for the first time in 14 years, the election significantly influenced the most searched lists.

People utilised Google not only to learn more about Ireland’s new President, Catherine Connolly – who was the third most searched overall term and the most searched person this year – but also about the presidential election in general. Ireland’s presidential election appeared on the most searched list, and in the ‘How To’ list, ‘How to spoil your vote Ireland’ was the second most searched term, while ‘How to register to vote in Ireland’ was the fifth most searched term.

2025 was a monumental year for sport. The Ryder Cup, where Europe triumphed, was the second most searched term overall, with football and rugby also making the most searched list.

The Top 10 Most Googled recipe list offers a peek into Ireland’s culinary adventures. This year saw Ireland embracing comfort and creativity, with coffee topping the list, closely followed by the social media sensation, Dubai Chocolate.

Three cocktails made their way up the chart; the Pornstar Martini, Hugo Spritz and Pimms. Pancakes, Gooseberry Jam and Cupcakes also made an appearance on the list.

2025 was the year of unmissable TV shows that had everyone talking and searching. Monster: The Ed Gein Story and Adolescence were the most searched TV shows, and they also featured on the overall most searched list, demonstrating their popularity.

Google Search also played a role in helping people decide what to watch at the cinema this year, with Nosferatu, 28 Years Later and Superman all featuring at the top of the most searched Movie list.

Everyday queries and timely responses are what millions seek on Google daily. From health and wellbeing to social media trends and sports, Search aids Ireland in managing the practicalities of daily life and comprehending current news.

‘What is Listeria?’ was the most searched question in the ‘What is’ category, while other trending questions from the Irish public included ‘What is 6 7?’ and ‘What is a tariff?’
