Being up for three awards was proof for Jesse Genns and his band that they are beginning to shine like the stars they are.
Swift Current musician Jesse Genns says this year’s Saskatchewan Country Music Awards were a major milestone for both him and his fellow band members.
“It was pretty unreal,” said Genns. “Getting a little bit of recognition that way means a lot.”
Genns’ song Clovers, a collaboration with bassist Marcus Braun, received a nomination for Song of the Year. Braun was nominated for Bass Player of the Year, and Genns earned a nomination for Emerging Artist of the Year.
“Having Marcus collab on Clovers has just been a blessing,” said Genns. “Having him as part of my band has been incredible. I can’t speak highly enough of all my bandmates. They sure know how to make a guy sound a lot better than maybe he actually is.”
Genns says the song came together quickly ahead of the Swift Current Broncos’ annual memorial game honouring the four players killed in a 2021 crash.
“Marcus pitched me the song during a rehearsal,” he said. “I pitched it to the Broncos, and they called me on Dec. 22, saying they’d love to use it. I looked at Marcus and said, Well, they want to use it, but we don’t have it recorded yet. So we ran to the studio as fast as we could and hammered it out in less than a week.”
Genns says he’s grateful for the support he has received and excited for what comes next.
“It’s been an incredible experience,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of success with Clovers, and I’m just thankful for everyone who’s been part of the journey.”
