Lily previously opened up about an eating disorder she suffered in her 2017 memoir, Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me
She had only just written the first chapter of Unfiltered a week before being asked to star as an anorexic patient in To The Bone back in 2015 and understandably her mother, Jill Tavelman, did not want her to take the role.
Yet, while promoting the movie at Sundance in 2017, she opened up to IMDb Studio about the dark comedy, which is based on the film’s director Marti Noxon’s own eating disorder when she was young.
She shared: ‘This was definitely a more dramatic role for me, I suffered with eating disorders when I was a teenager as well.

‘I wrote a book last year and I wrote my chapter on my experiences a week before I got Marti’s script and it was like the universe putting these things in my sphere to help me face, kind of dead on, a fear that I used to have.’
Lily lost weight more than 20lbs to play the film’s main character Ellen, but this time with the help of a nutritionist.
She explained of the process: ‘It caused me to have to emotionally go there, but in a way that was the most safe, healthy way possible with a nutritionist, and really to physically go there but also emotionally.
‘And it did require a different set of emotional skills, to kind of go back in time for me, with you know, my experiences.’
