Cody Gakpo is to spend “a few weeks” out injured, but Federico Chiesa still has an outside chance of making the squad to play Inter Milan.
Due to injuries concerning Gakpo, Chiesa and Wataru Endo, Slot has a very thin squad for Liverpool’s match against Inter Milan.
His 19-man squad, which doesn’t include Mo Salah, features three goalkeepers and 19-year-old centre-back Wellity Lucky.
Not involved are Gakpo, Chiesa and Endo, none of whom trained on Monday with the team.
Slot explained that Gakpo “unfortunately picked up an injury in our last game we played against Leeds and he will be out for a few weeks,” but he didn’t go into detail.
On Chiesa, who has remained on Merseyside, the head coach said: “Federico is ill, so that is poor timing you could say, but yeah, it’s not something you can do anything about.
“We are monitoring his situation. If he has an amazing recovery which I, we, doctors don’t expect, he might travel tomorrow but let’s have a fair expectation – that’s not what I expect.”
Asked for further comment on the Italian, Slot laughed and replied: “It is difficult to be more specific. I don’t know if anyone wants to hear what he exactly has!
“But he came in this morning, so he’s ill.”
