One of Stoke-on-Trent’s flagship museums is now ‘partially closed’. The ‘partial closure’ of the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery (PMAG), in Hanley, came into force last night.

It comes ahead of the Potteries Museum closing completely from December 20 until March 28 to allow for the redevelopment of the ground floor. Gladstone Pottery Museum will open this winter to compensate for the Potteries Museum closure.

A council report states: “The closure of PMAG from the week commencing 7 December to allow the decant of the Natural History Gallery and enable Christmas events to be delivered. The theatre, lower basement café, front entrance and toilets will still be open. Full closure of the museum will start after the Christmas events have concluded on 19 December with the museum reopening on 28 March 2026.

“The works that will be undertaken during the temporary closure will be works to secure fire strategy compliance for the entire building, structural and asbestos works to the ground floor. On completion of these works the museum will open fully whilst work continues to the projected date of full completion in December 2026, subject to finalisation of the project plan.

“Whilst PMAG is closed Gladstone Pottery Museum (GPM) will open from January to March 2026. A re-structure of the museum staffing in 2022 to deliver savings required GPM to move to seasonal opening, April to October. This was varied in 2025 to contribute to the centenary programme attracting 30,000 visitors. Whilst PMAG is closed temporarily it will be important to maintain a public museum programme and this will be achieved through a programme of events and activities at Gladstone Pottery Museum and other venues across the city where possible.”
