Met Eireann have extended their Marine Storm Warnings as they warn that winds could reach “violent storm force 11.”

The Red Warning has now been updated to include coasts from Mizen Head to Slyne Head to Malin Head.

They said: “Expect stronger gusts on these coasts.

“South to southwest winds will occasionally reach violent storm force 11. “

It comes after series of warnings as the nation prepares for Storm Bram.

The national forecaster warned the public in Galway, Clare, Limerick, Donegal, Leitrim, Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Wexford, Mayo and Sligo to prepare for Storm Bram with gale force winds expected in coastal areas.

Maps show that the west coast is amongst the places the storm is set to hit hardest from around 10am on Tuesday morning 9 December.

The Orange warning comes into effect first in Cork, Kerry, and Waterford at 7am on Tuesday 9 December Galway, Clare, Limerick, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo are under the same warning from 10am on Tuesday.

Donegal Weather Channel outlined the severity expected: “Still some divide on models this morning with this attached UK Met office model showing the strongest winds on Tuesday with wind gusts in excess of 130kmh across western and northwestern counties on Tuesday.

“The most likely outcome at the moment once the updated warnings are issued this morning is for a Orange warning for winds issued for Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Mayo, Galway, Clare and Kerry.

“With these mentioned counties the main worry also is the risk of coastal flooding due to the storm coinciding with the high astronomical spring tides. Please stay away from coastal areas on Tuesday particularly.

“At the moment looking at the overall risk based on a blend of a number of models is for winds gusting in general between 100km/hr to 130km/hr.

“I expect updated warnings to be issued over the coming hour ahead of Met Eireanns technical briefing with the local authorities at 11am this morning.”
