Donegal Deputy Charles Ward has slammed the government for labelling the defective concrete crisis a ‘legacy issue’ in the government’s new housing plan.
The housing plan, ‘Delivering Homes, Building Communities’, committed to addressing homes, duplexes and apartments that were built with defective materials and with structural flaws.
“Addressing these legacy issues is a Government priority,” said the plan.
“Government will continue to work with the owners and owner’s management companies to resolve these issues.”
He said: ‘It is disappointing, but sadly not surprising, that there is so little mention of the Defective Concrete Crisis in this new housing plan, a crisis that impacts thousands of people across the country, yet only mentioned a handful of times, and worse, referred to as a “legacy issue”. This is far from a “legacy issue”. It’s alive. It’s present. It’s persistent.’
The Donegal Deputy described how the crisis is a daily reality for his constituents in Donegal, and referred to his own experience last week when a happy moment of putting up Christmas lights at his house in Drumkeen was overshadowed by the dark reality of a crumbling home.
While he was recording the event in the hope of capturing some Christmas cheer, he soon realised that the external leaf had collapsed into the cavity.
He said: “This is not a legacy issue, this is my daily life. And the daily life of many other families.
“We have only seen the tip of the iceberg of this issue.”
The 100% Redress TD stated: “This issue is far from past, it is not going away. It is here now, and it is waiting for us in the future.”
