Laws to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2035 are to be dropped, in a major U-turn by the EU on what was a key part of its green agenda.

It means the Irish Government will be under no obligation to meet its objective of ensuring a third of the total car fleet is electric by 2030.
