A call has gone out to schools across the country from former Olympian athlete David Gillick who has joined forces with Fyffes in a quest to find ‘Ireland’s Fittest School 2026’.

Schools across North Cork are encouraged to compete for the Ireland’s Fittest School title in a bid to keep the accolade in the area.

Last year’s champions, Ballyhass National School fought off stiff competition from across the island in the prestigious event.

Irish Olympian sprinter David Gillick has teamed up with Fyffes once again in a quest to find Ireland’s Fittest School 2026.

The premise of the competition is to promote the importance of exercise, fitness and develop healthy eating habits amongst young people.

The central feature of the programme will be a series of exercise routines, recorded by Gillick, alongside Irish fitness trainer, Sharon Flanagan – which competing schools can adopt as part of their PE curriculum and against which performance will be measured and tracked online.

The competition will run for eight weeks starting on January 26, and the top four schools from each province will compete in regional qualifiers in April.

The top school in Munster, Connacht, Leinster and Ulster will then progress to the grand final in May, with a range of sport equipment worth €8,000 awarded to the victors.

Fyffes Head of Marketing, Emma Hunt-Duffy said:

“Amongst schools nationwide, the level of interest in this competition continues to grow each year. We look forward to seeing more and more teachers and young pupils incorporating the exercise routines into their PE classes, as a fun and easy way to stay active and keep fit,” she said.

School registrations are now open and further details can be found online at www.fyffesfittestschool.ie.
