ITV Racing Saturday comes from Cheltenham and Doncaster, starting here with a mares’ handicap chase over an extended 2m4f. A huge field and competitive. You don’t get much of a price with the Skeltons, but their THEONEWEDREAMOF really should have every chance for trainer Dan and jockey Harry. Stamina is the key to this mare, and she did well when stepped up to 3m at Exeter last time when scoring off 112. She now has to win rated 117, but her stamina will be key against some of these and she has loads of experience. She should go very well.
13:50 Cheltenham – Vincenzo
The December Gold Cup, run to Support the Hunt Family Fund, Handicap Chase over an extended 2m4f. VINCENZO might not be the strongest stayer in this field but I suspect he’s going to be bang in the mix once again after a second in the Paddy Power Gold Cup. He had Hoe Joly Smoke behind in third that day and is now 5lb worse off because jockey Dylan Johnston can’t claim 3lb. That all said, he travelled better than his old rival turning for home and I suspect might have a bit more class. The Sam Thomas runner was also making seasonal debut, while the Skelton challenger had a run. So all in all I’m hopeful of a form confirmation. I want to take on Jagwar as I’m not sure about the form of his Cheltenham success. That might be a mistake!
A handicap chase over 3m. Some slow horses here. JOYEUX MACHIN has not looked a natural chaser in the past so he’s a leap of faith. That said, he didn’t run that badly over hurdles at Haydock last time in a big field and with Harry Atkins taking off 7lb he’s very well handicapped for Dan Skelton.
A handicap chase over an extended 2m. COUNTRY MILE has been a frustrating horse for me and doesn’t find much off the bridle. He’s run two fine races this season, when second at Uttoxeter and this track, last time chasing home Alnilam, having made a mistake at the first and making other errors on the way round. He made a bad error two out. I wonder if they might go from the front and just say Go on, son! Dan Skelton trains. Harry Skelton rides.
14:40 Doncaster – Kateira
Listed class now for a mares’ hurdle over an extended 3m. On everything we know, KATEIRA should hack up here for Dan Skelton and Tristan Durrell. The mare is fit and well and returned smashing up Golden Ace at Wetherby. She wasn’t as good at Ascot last time, but she should just outclass this lot even though the trip is as far as she wants to go.
A Grade 2 in a novices’ hurdle over 3m. RECKLESS SPENDING has been gagging for a step up in distance and gets it here for Nicky Henderson and Nico de Boinville. The stable is in great form, and this gelding stayed on well in third behind Kripticjim at Ascot last time. That was over nearly 2m4f and this trip looks perfect.
15:17 Doncaster – Bowmore
A handicap hurdle over an extended 2m. Not many of these could win a handicap hurdle at Newbury, but BOWMORE did that for Charlie Longsdon when last seen and he can follow up even though he’s up 10lb, which is a hefty chunk. Daire McConville takes off 7lb, which helps as he took off 3lb last time. So 4lb is negated.
Now a handicap hurdle over an extended 2m5f. JUBILEE ALPHA brings the class in here, but has to hump 12st as a result. The Paul Nicholls mare usually travels strongly and does most of her galloping on the bridle. The hope is that her class pulls her through. Last time at Wincanton, the re-opposing Sweet Caryline beat her but would have won that race but for a mistake two out and is 1lb better off. She did go up 4lb for that, which is harsh in my book. So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me, Paddy?
