Customers from across north Kerry and beyond came to visit Listowel’s new Lidl store when it officially opened on Thursday.

Crowds of curious people came to do some Christmas shopping, and take a look at the new supermarket throughout the day.

The first ten customers through the doors received complementary Lidl gift vouchers.

Kerry Ladies’ footballer Cait Lynch cut the ribbon on the new premises alongside store employees and welcomed customers.

Cait said she was delighted to open the new store.

“Lidl has been a brilliant sponsor to the LGFA for years, and it’s fantastic to see this investment in our community. The new Lidl Listowel is a huge boost, creating local jobs and giving shoppers access to Lidl’s exceptional quality and great value,” she said.

The new premises, located next to the site of the old store on the John B Keane Road, represents an investment of more than €9 million.

Five additional permanent retail jobs have been created at the new store, bringing the number of employees to 25.

The store team has donated €500 in Lidl vouchers each to the local charities Nano Nagle Listowel and Kerry Parents and Friends Association.

The new store sits on a site of 2,493sqm and boasts a 1,645sqm sales floor offering expanded aisle space, in-store bakery and two Deposit Return Scheme machines.

It has an increased number of tills and new self-service checkouts. Outside, there is 140 car parking spaces and electric vehicle charging points.

There is almost 1,000sqm of solar panels on the roof of the premises.

The new store opening in Listowel comes weeks after Lidl Ireland opened another brand new supermarket in Killorglin.
