Liverpool secured a hard-fought 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield on Saturday, moving up the Premier League table and giving fans some much-needed home joy. The Reds started the match strongly, with Hugo Ekitike scoring the fastest Premier League goal of the season just 46 seconds in. Mohamed Salah, back in the squad after a brief absence, came off the bench to make an immediate impact, assisting Ekitike’s second goal.
Despite the positive result, the match was far from smooth for Liverpool. Injuries disrupted the team’s rhythm, with key players forced off at different stages. These setbacks came at a crucial point in the season, with Liverpool preparing for upcoming fixtures and the intense run-in of the Premier League. The squad also faces further challenges with Mo Salah heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations.
After the match, head coach Arne Slot provided an update on the injuries that impacted the game. Joe Gomez had to leave the pitch during the first half due to a muscle problem, while Dominik Szoboszlai, who had been redeployed to cover Gomez’s position at right-back, also needed to be withdrawn late in the game.
Slot addressed both situations candidly, “If I have a player who goes off with a muscle injury like Joe, that’s normally not a positive thing. I would not expect him to be in the squad next week [at Tottenham Hotspur]. But sometimes you get a positive surprise.”
Slot also reflected on why Gomez hasn’t been overused despite being a key defender, “People now maybe understand a bit better why I was always so cautious not to play him so many games. I assume many people thought, ‘If you have a defender, if you have a right full-back, why don’t you play him?’”
On Szoboszlai, who suffered an ankle issue, Slot added, “And Dom, it was his ankle. It didn’t look great when I just saw him. But he has unbelievable mentality so let’s hope for the best.”
Slot reassured fans about squad depth for the coming weeks, noting, “The good thing is that Conor Bradley comes back from a suspension [next week] and normally Jeremie Frimpong will train with us also. But we’re also going to miss Mo [Salah] because he is going to go to the Africa Cup of Nations.”
Liverpool now face Tottenham knowing that squad rotation and careful management will be key to maintaining momentum. The focus will be on keeping players fit while continuing to build confidence ahead of the busy schedule ahead.
